I gatti, lo sappiamo bene, non sono tutti uguali. Si differenziano non solo per le combinazioni di colori più diverse, i caratteri variopinti e le loro personali stramberie, ma qualche volta anche per il numero di dita. I gatti che possiedono più di cinque dita sulle zampe anteriori e più di quattro su quelle posteriori sono infatti definiti polidattili: polidattili erano, ad esempio, i gatti di Ernest Hemingway. Oggi vi presentiamo un’altra affascinante polidattile: Natasha, micia rossa di origini newyorkesi.

Natasha has seven toes on both front paws - two more than normal - and five on her hind legs instead of four.

Natasha, per quanto ne sappiamo e per quanto ne sa la sua umana, Shirley Bellwood, nasce come randagia.

Più che Natasha in sé, Shirley incontra per primo il suo miagolio. Acuto, penetrante, che la donna riusciva a udire dalla finestra del proprio appartamento. Non ha resistito granché prima di scegliere di andare a cercare la micia a cui apparteneva e accoglierla in casa sua e nel proprio cuore, finendo per portarla con sé al momento di emigrare a Wimborne, cittadina della contea inglese del Dorset.

Oggi Natasha ha 19 anni, ha sviluppato un caratterino decisamente volitivo e porta ancora, con impeccabile eleganza, le sue… 24 dita.

Già, 24, perché possiede due dita extra su ciascuna zampa anteriore, e una in più su ciascuna zampa posteriore, per un totale appunto di 24 invece della comune somma di 18. Le sue zampe sono, inoltre, più massicce del normale, più grandi e più forti. Lei, rossa e polidattile, ci è nata, o così pare. Unisce in lei due tratti decisamente peculiari, quindi: il colore rosso del pelo, molto più frequente nei maschi, e la polidattilità.

Forse, proprio le sue particolarità l’avrebbero aiutata a trovare qualcuno che si innamorasse di lei. Ma evidentemente, il destino aspettava di unire proprio lei e Shirley: che oggi, dopo anni e anni di convivenza, hanno sviluppato una relazione meravigliosamente complementare.
